Supporting Future Marketers – Spotlight on Our Marketing Intern Declan
This week marks the final week with our marketing intern Declan Butler before he leaves to complete his university exams. At Darcey Quigley & Co, we are committed to supporting the development and growth of young people just starting out in their career. In January we were pleased to welcome Declan as a member of the marketing team in the role of “Marketing Intern” to support the busy team with day-to-day tasks and to gain work experience and build upon what he’s already learnt during his time at university.
As his time at Darcey Quigley is coming to an end this week, we caught up with Declan to find out more about him and how his experience has been working in marketing. Here’s what he had to say!
Tell us a bit about your time at university:
I am currently studying at Strathclyde University. I am in my third-year majoring in Marketing and Human Resource Management. Before going to Strathclyde university, I studied at City of Glasgow College for 2 years before entering university in third year. I have one more year to go before graduating. I’ve loved my course as it’s given me a really well-rounded knowledge of marketing which I’ve been able to put into practice during my internship at Darcey Quigley. As part of my course, I am required to complete 100 hours of a marketing apprenticeship, so I was very lucky to have been given this opportunity to join the team at DQ.
What interested you to study marketing?
I have been interested in marketing since secondary school. When we first dived into the marketing world, I found it all very intriguing, as it’s the front line. It is what drives individuals towards businesses, and I’ve always found that interesting and wanted to be a part of the creation of the customer journey.
How have you found your time at Darcey Quigley?
I really wanted to achieve a greater understanding of marketing while here and further develop my skills. It’s been a great experience seeing how the workplace operates, and I’ve been excited to learn more every week. Putting into practice what I’ve learnt at uni so far has been really helpful. I’ve got to try out systems I’ve never used before that I wouldn’t have the opportunity to use otherwise like Salesforce, Canva Pro and Zoho. Strengthening my network is another highlight of my time at Darcey Quigley so far and I’ve been made to feel very welcome as part of team DQ.
It has really been a privilege working here and I feel grateful for the opportunity that has arisen for me.
Outside of work & uni what do you like to do?
I really like music and movies, one of my favourite things is discovering new media that I enjoy. I’m also very into football and love attending games and following a team local to me.
What’s a piece of advice you’d give to a new marketing student?
Outside of work I try my best to stay up to date with trends, so I’d definitely recommend keeping up with what’s going on in the marketing world outside of class as well. This helped me gain a better understanding of what was needed from me while working at Darcey Quigley.
